Georgia’s roadways remain busy and, unfortunately, dangerous. With thousands of vehicles on the move every day, traffic incidents continue to be a serious concern. In 2024, the state recorded more than 367,000 car accidents. Out of those, 1,494 resulted in fatalities. These numbers show just how important it is to understand the risks of being behind the wheel in our state.
According to Georgia’s crash data portal, more than one-third of reported wrecks involved injuries. Last year alone, over 143,000 people were injured in crashes across the state. In the past five years, Georgia has seen over 727,000 injury-related collisions. These are not just statistics. They represent people whose lives were interrupted or forever changed by an unexpected crash.

Holiday weekends are a common time for increased travel. Memorial Day in particular sees a significant rise in vehicles on the road. During the 2024 Memorial Day travel period, the Georgia Department of Public Safety reported 11 deaths from eight fatal wrecks across the state. Hundreds more were injured in crashes investigated during the 78-hour period.
Distracted driving continues to be the number one cause of car accidents in Georgia. Impaired driving remains a close second, especially during long weekends. Nearly 500 people were arrested for DUI during Memorial Day weekend alone. That is almost 100 more arrests than in 2023.

Every time you drive, your safety depends on the choices you make. Whether you are heading out for a quick errand or a long road trip, keep these reminders in mind:
• Avoid distractions and keep your full attention on the road
• Follow posted speed limits and traffic signals
• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
• Use caution at intersections and look carefully before turning
• Always wear your seatbelt and make sure passengers do the same
While you cannot control the actions of other drivers, you can reduce your own risk by driving responsibly.
